Was fortunate enough to have been invited to the launch of this exhibition on Monday (1st July)at the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge.
The launch was attended by approx. 100(?) guests, which included a diverse range of community members, artists, writers, teachers, and academics. The afternoon was spread over three sites, starting at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the Leverhulme Centre, and then finally the location of the exhibition, the Fitzwilliam. Amongst the speeches and presentations was a reading by the poet Ben Okri OBE.
It's funded by The Monument Trust, Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, The Marlay Group, and The Art Fund, so lots of endorsement.
There must be several hundred combs on display from across Africa and the diaspora, from the Badarian period up to the modern, plastic types.
So if you're visiting London over the summer (you may see the advertisements on the Underground)try and visit the Fitz. Takes about 45 minutes to an hour to get to Cambridge by train, then it's a 10 minute cab ride to the museum.
Only thing is, you'll have missed all the free booze!
