Everything is everything. Have you actually visited Cairo? What is your opinion? Everyone has such wonderful things to say.

Soliman Pasha Square and street look prettier now after 1 am. Wish I'd live in this area one day. There is this bar for the Cairo Communist gang called Ritz.. not so sure about the name, as I have been once or twice.

jag, in reference to your 'no comment' post ..thanks for the nice comment

Also, most Egyptians do pronounce the name of the famous cafe/bar you've mentioned, in English or Arabic, instead of French. So it sounds like Ritz or Rich...

Café 'Riche' had a wide reputation especially between writers, poets, journalists and intellectual Egyptians and foreigners living in Egypt, as it was considered a reunion place for this class. It also had an important role in the patriotic and revolutionary movement in Egypt, especially in the revolution of 1919. A printing machine was found in a secret place in the basement, which mostly was used to support the revolution.

“During the Nasser period, in particular, the café became a place where the intellectuals of Cairo used to meet, to shape and discuss the future of the country. Café Riche, as many other public coffee shops, was “the medium” that intellectuals used to spread out their revolutionary opinions.” The very informal atmosphere was indeed playing an important role to make their meetings successful."

Closed for many years, it has re-opened.

For The Intellectuals and the interested in the idea that ART is an everyday activity
http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/1999/427/fe2.htm

You will adore the thoroughly contemporary place that recaptures turn-of-the-century memories, comprising a flat in a former townhouse, which had been shut down for many years. It is where the famous Egyptian painter/poet Hassan Soliman, started, before he became famous.

Contrary to expectations, it is now open to everyone, from sophisticated literati to street children, up to and including the electricians and car mechanics who take up the rest of the lane, in which it stands.

Cairo is SAFE friends, it is the City Victorious!

For any and all ETers that are here, Cafe Riche will probably be on the Pub Crawl tour being given on May 8th starting at 4 pm at the Nile Hilton.

Women Of Cairo
I sail across my own painting, working without a cam pass and there are never stars. Always with painting like in love: I want and can't have. I wind in restless walk, and kick mud. Ideas about woman, like plants, spring and don't bind the soil. Along too many themes of ideas I feel burning, but energy never is lost and wishes flash.
.... Now in our time, even hope can be bought. Out of tears, I shall not mind. Too strong is the embrace of love, but love never saves tomorrow, and never I shall be crushed by memory.
.... Bleeding out is my love to you.. I don't care, as long as I paint.
.... There is no less beauty in your serenity and no less promise for sharing tomorrow. You catch me in mist.
.... So enchanting is your presence that I could not take my eyes from the dress holding your bosom, I remember. Seeing your legs. I see your eyes staring at me.
All this I have seen, and you insist that I am a blind man, in spite of regretting, now sunlight and the long lonely shadow spreads, before your slippers on the floor.
Wounded by your silent gestures I am. Distance between my self, and me, as an artist, and distance between you, and me let me leave you because I am certain of nothing, and of you. Instead of that I have painted you. You send me dreams, and leave me stars. Blessing myth of love content, the blind man only.
Hold your breath woman of Cairo, my cup is empty but I have painted you- remove your mask... You never give your naked soul to a naked day.
Lambo the barman says, "to dig out a nail dig in another nail," I say "I am sailing.. I have no time to dig in nails, or dig out nails. I am looking for grey distance without limits.
Always the end of the fog is unknown. Oh Limbo, anchorite I am working in darkness with our anxiety or animus against any woman. I prefer to be alone. Solitude is a sacred anthem.

Woooow jag, you typed it all!! I know for a fact that it's not on the net

[I think that this is your longest post, if I may add]

What a beautiful poem, Woman of Cairo...I'd love to have the opportunity to meet the poet, Hassan Soliman himself, when in Cairo soon ~ he is in his early eighties, I believe.

Thank you ya amar!

I tried to post some Cairo traffic pictures but it did not work...so just to go full circle since I've started these pictures posting:

Visualize it:

Sunny sunny midday...................sweaty sweaty time!!! get your sunglasses babies...and hit it:

Lines of modern cars mingling with old model cars, and buses and minibuses, and vans and mini vans, and people crossing the street in the middle of the traffic, and cars stopping in the middle of traffic to let someone off that actually starts running in the middle of traffic, and hey... catch a piece of bread flying from a cart carrying fresh baked bread, and trucks and bicycles and motorcycles and more people crossing... and what is that?...a horse? wow...how? and right near it on the left side..yes..you caught it, a donkey with his owner carrying a cart of old goodies....and more people crossing... and what's happening...suddenly traffic comes to an abrupt stop, everything is blocked...what's going on people @#$!!!? Move move ~ yallah yallah...
Oh it's the President passing....what? now? how? ok let's light a cigarette..he he he...

La vida loca de Cairo!!!!

PS:I was able to post this one, at least..:

OOOOooooh...Debbie... I've been reading about our friend's upcoming visit on ET and have held back from joining the "I'm so jealous" posts and succumbing to my own personal pity party...
but then I saw the pic of Cafe Riche where I went with my friend the night before I last left (looking for a quieter place to talk, as After 8's music was just tuning up rather loudly)... and got WAY too nostalgic, and ... I was staying at the Nile Hilton, too.. and I'm getting sadder and sadder looking at these boards since I don't know when I'll be getting back to Egypt... and... maybe I'll just have to stop looking until I have some real travel plans.

For anyone interested in the Pub Crawl, keep your eye on this board. We will probably start a bit later than the 4 pm hour mentioned before as we have some poor soles that have to work on Saturday that want to join us.

Could be about 6 we will start

Artemi, you made me feel sad too.
BUT...
What if you had a flight reservation????
That could help, don't you think?
You don't have to pay before they cut the ticket and they should renew the reservations every 10 days, until you pay...check it out with your travel agent he he he...

I found this beautiful gallery of Central Cairo pictures, including a Coptic Church, a street lemon seller, a butcher shop, a vegetable shop, and so much more...

Enjoy!
