Tradition. But I *never* wanted to take a man's last name - to me it symbolizes ownership, no flipping way. I was so happy that this name change wasn't a part of my husband's culture. We didn't even have to have a discussion about it.
My *family* on the other hand, had a **** fit over my keeping my maiden name...what about the children? they ask. Like most people won't get the concept that I have a different last name than my kids. Duh.
Anyway, to each his own.

Western culture is different than Arab culture.
Doesn't mean western practice of taking a husband's name is akin to the common Arab attitude of western women being sluts.
Just because western customs are differnt than Arab customs doesn't mean western customs are wrong or inferior.
