For those who want to know, I just asked that Customs place in Ramses how much they charge on goods coming into Egypt, and they said 60% of the value of the stuff. is this for goods physically brought into egypt via the airport, or what the post office charges if, say, I were to mail a gift to cairo?

That's what they charge if you mail something to Egypt or if someone in Egypt orders something from abroad. I don't think they charge you for books, magazines and similar stuff though.
