maadi used to be and I think still , the safest area in egypt , has the best and nicest people in Egypt, it used to be very quiet area , there is an old egyptian movie called , crime in the queit distrect , and the crime was going on in Maadi ,, but the main thing, even on flim wise industry , Maadi was known as the quiet district in Egypt

I lived in Maadi from 1999-2004 and I've visited it about a half-dozen times since then. I totally agree - Maadi has changed a lot. The very first time I visited it in the early 90's many paved roads (presently) were actually dirt roads back then. I have a very fond memory of being lost in Maadi and the taxi-driver was asked by locals 'what brought you here', we were so lost and he had a wonderful reply "allah gabah l'masr wa'howa gabny lokum' (God brought him to Egypt and he brought me to you )

Things have changed a lot and some places I mentioned are not as great now as they were back in 2000. The pubs for example are patronized by certain 'undesirables' whereas back in 2000 many western foreigners enjoyed themselves. It seems 9-11 played a huge role in their demise. You know the Red Onion became a haven for Maadites from the 'sex trade' practiced in other places.

Prostitutes are strictly prohibited from entering such a premise smilarly to many other
places throughout Cairo. I remember when Golden Bell used to serve authentic Korean food cooked by a real Korean Chef/Cook.

Maadi is clearly not what it used to be. It is true that many Egyptians and many 'comfortable' foreignors left especially families. Sadly replaced by single men, refugees and others who hoard money rather than spend.

It is also a shame that so many villas were demolished and replaced by 10-15 story buildings. Shame what transpired in Sakanat-al-Maadi.

And I also agree despite all the woes it is still a tranquil enclave and unmatched in Egypt.

If I were to live for 6months to 1 year I might very well opt for Zamalek, but for longer than that I need tranquility from the 25 million Cairense. People wise Maadites are beautiful people. It is apparent by their demeanor. Good homes and good families and it is evident.

I reckon when you lived there it was paradise
