I do see menin's point as do you though. That societal standards are, well, passed on socially and by anyone and women do compete.
I don't profess to know the psych of Black American women, but in Africa, as the article -- that meninarmer himself posted as the intro -- correctly notes, those women who bleach their skins, primarily do so, because they think it increases their sexual appeal to the opposite sex. These individuals are not the norm of the society, there are a great many other people who do not bleach their skins. No doubt, there is observation amongst sections of some cosmopolitan areas of Africa, bombarded with "western" marketed or influenced skin & hair products and entertainment concerns, wherein some perceive that there is a trend in African men going for lighter-toned females than the darker ones or favoritism towards lighter-toned females in the very industries [marketing industries/concerns for cosmetics and clothing, not to mention the entertainment industry itself] that promote aforementioned products, and so, some turn to unhealthy means to supposedly rectify this, by seeking artificial skin lightning and hair straightening products. Considerably light-toned people are not the norm in predominantly dark skin African societies, and so, it makes no sense, to perceive this as "peer pressure" competition amongst women of said societies; if anything, they'd be frowned upon, because they are a minority...likely, dismissed as outcasts of 'white-person' wannabes, if it were simply a matter of women doing it for other women, as opposed to the few who do it, as a means to augment their sexual appeal or worth to the opposite sex or industry (usually there as "western manufactured" product outlets) that are largely controlled by the opposite sex.
This is exactly what the situation is.
Many women eventually regret bleaching their skin as many a Nigerian men who "delight" in women with bleached skin will NOT marry one. In fact, in Nigeria it has become very easy to identify women in the post-bleaching phase where they have a strange reddish skin-tone that is neither the original nor the "light" skin they had while actively bleaching.

The Sambo Mentality and the Stockholm Syndrome
Stockholm Syndrome involves a bi-directional bond of emotional reliance. The criminals, requiring captives for their survival or purposes of extortion, impress themselves psychologically and / or physically upon their captives who, perceiving their own situation as inescapable (whether it be so or not), soon look to their abusers for protection and assistance. It is this dynamic which causes former hostages and abuse survivors to minimize the damage done to them and refuse to cooperate in prosecuting their tormentors. Contributing factors to the syndrome are generally understood to evolve within the following scenarios:
The presence of a perceived threat to one's physical or psychological survival and the belief that the abuser will carry out the threat. The presence of a perceived small kindness from the abuser to the victim. Isolation from perspectives other than those of the abuser. The perceived inability to escape the situation.
Obviously there is a great deal of relief when the victim realizes that he or she has avoided death, at least for the moment. From relief there evolves a feeling of gratitude and, from gratitude, a feeling of being behoven. During long-term captivity, victims identify at an ever-deeper level with their captors as they come to know them more personally and, in the most severe cases, as with Patty Hearst, the victim fully assimilates the captors way of thinking. It is such a condition that ought to be recognised as played out in Olaudah Equianos eighteenth-century slave narrative. Supposedly captured from modern-day Nigeria, where he would otherwise have remained an Igbo chieftains son, scholarship dealing with this figure must inevitably address Vincent Carrettas research, which debates whether Equiano was an identity revealed...or an identity assumed by Gustavus Vassa in 1789 for rhetorical (and financial) ends3, the issue revolving around whether Equiano pieced together his early life in Africa from oral history and ethnography in order to authenticate his status as an original African unjustly transported to the New World or whether he truly did have such an early life over there.
This paper contests that, either way, his narrative was colored by Stockholm Syndrome, which, I would argue, is an element just as extra-personal as a Carolinian claiming African nobility inasmuch as both additions can be observed as originating in other peoples characters, real or imagined. Whether or not Equiano came from Africa is not what I intend to examine here. Equiano certainly did know a captain Pascal and formed with him the bonds which led to Stockholm Syndrome it matters not whether his status as a slave resulted from an African abduction or an upbringing solely in the New World. His life upon boarding the Industrious Bee had been traumatic enough to leave him psychologically vulnerable, the legacy of which can be seen in the entire Narrative as Tanya Caldwell points out in noting that;
From the beginning of his Narrative Equiano shows both directly, even painstakingly, and indirectly, yet unmistakably, the native European features and contours of his mind, and takes every opportunity to repudiate any fundamental difference between himself and the culture in which he developed as a self-conscious social being.
Along similar lines, Susan Marren notes that every gesture that Equiano makes to establish himself as a white man diminishes his claim to an African identity and risks leaving the impression not that he is representative of the slaves but that he is exceptional. This danger takes place at the textual level but, in terms of Equianos actual experiences, it is clear that the intensely proximate figure of Pascal was a danger which registered at the mental and cultural level - to such an extent that the acquisition of a European identity would have seemed necessary for survival. In this way, we see that his urge to be seen as white and / or European evolves as much from real-life crisis as from textual confidence.
This is indeed the formative moment of Equianos life, when his existence is felt to hang in the balance and yet, beginning to comprehend English, he gradually becomes aware of his Masters wishes and intentions, and can begin to mould himself accordingly. Although Pascal threatens to kill him, it is an obvious but extremely important point that he does not do so. Equiano has already seen the slavers carry out their threats, even going as far as to flog one of their own men to death. Having witnessed such barbarity, the smallest concession, even the mere privilege of being permitted to live, must have seemed magnanimous and tempted him to gratitude. This prompts him to establish an emotional dependency upon his Master, soon made clear in his distress at prospective separation: I cried immediately, and said I would not leave him.At this point we see that Stockholm Syndrome has fully taken effect, for, at the very least, Equiano has been offered a chance to escape and quite possibly with the blessing of Pascal who, though it is not clear, may even have been subtly intimating that freedom of mobility would be returned if he wanted it. Whatever the intent, Equiano will have none of it and, gradually emerging from his formerly terrorized condition, he now has no difficulty in wishing to make himself white by repeatedly washing his face. Later, he states how he soon grew a stranger to terror of every kind, and was, in that respect at least, almost an Englishman. Gradually inured to his hardship, this capacity to endure becomes itself a qualification allowing him to call himself a group member. So absolutely does this acculturation take place that Equiano is distant at best when encountering an African compatriot : he soon came close to me...as if I had been his brother, though we had never seen each other before. "It is to a white shipmate, Dick, that Equiano feels fraternal connection: [The chest and other things Pascal] afterwards gave to me, and I regarded them as a memorial of my friend, whom I loved, and grieved for, as a brother. Clearly, if Equiano figured Dick as his brother then Pascal, as Captain and Master, was father. Yet despite the familial circle Equiano dreamily imagines to coexist between them, Pascal is not the benevolent foster-parent he imagines him to be. By the time that Equiano has progressed in his syndrome to such an extent that he believes himself to be free, or soon to become so, Pascal has no further use for the slave and sells him onward: I was so struck with the unexpectedness of this proceeding, that for some time I did not make a reply... he swore I should not move out of his sight, and if I did, he would cut my throat... The scene is sad indeed, yet are we to perceive this as a sudden turnaround on Pascals part or more a realisation of Equianos that he is not the group member he had imagined himself to be? the case, it is significant that separation does not see the termination of this condition of dependency. Indeed, in the conflict between cruel reality and Equianos mental self-deception it is the latter which wins through when an explanation of the Masters behaviour absolves Pascal of guilt, placing it entirely upon female influence: [The lady] had conceived a pique against me on some occasion when she was on board, and she did not fail to instigate my master to treat me in the manner he did.The son comes to the fathers defense, incredulity swiftly moving to exoneration, and this, in turn, developing once again into a hallmark emotion of the syndrome gratitude when Equiano is thankful for Pascals character reference, in truth little more than a sales pitch.
Equiano profits from slaving, even after he is free and can choose otherwise. In fact, he appears to interpret his actions in helping to establish a Mosquito Coast plantation as benevolent.
Stockholm Syndrome has been noted already as a relevant basis by which to examine African-Americans and yet seems to have gone largely ignored in research specific to Equiano. Its merits in this area are apparent since, being a mental condition in which the world comes to be understood from the perspective of the abuser, Equiano is an obvious candidate for a case study. We have seen how the examples of the Sveriges Kreditbank employees and Patty Hearst function well as models by which we may gauge his behaviour and re-presentations; how Pascal was a prototypical Master-captor whom Equiano had good reason to fear and did, yet came to love; and how the Narrative itself is as much an embodiment and expression of Equianos mental condition as it is of his abolitionist beliefs. If the point of diagnosing an eighteenth-century ex-slave in such a manner is not immediately apparent, one need only recall that his work was put to good use by English abolitionists who sought a wider audience. Explorer has been researching Albinism and Jewish genetic diseases and doesn't like what he's discovering. I don't much blame him. It's all pretty scary stuff, with only one path to a happy ending. Not something you'll typically see in the usual Hollywood script, unless it's The Fly 3, and there's nothing cheery about that.

If anyone is buying so-called skin bleachers then it is the Africans who live in America. Black Americans are the most proud Blacks in the world, moreso than Africans. You people problems are not our problems. We don't have much issue with blackness like other black people in the world.

This was followed by a grown-up Celie dealing with the harsh realities of beauty and Mista's in-house mistress Shug Avery.
Then you had Black sororities and fraternities who used the "brown paper bag test" to deny entrance to anyone darker than the bag.
The House Negro and Field Negro is the hugest myth in American history. Very dark and ugly black women worked in the house, rather 99.99% of those who worked in the house were very black, African, unattractive women. There weren't many light skin blacks then and even today there is not a lot of them. Dark women worked both the house and the fields. If there were any lightskin black working in the house that is because she was part of the family. The lightskin house negro is the hugest misconception of all time.

Ebony and Jet always had a reputation of representing the common black American man/woman. Practically everyone face in their issue were either brown, medium brown, dark brown, or black. There weren't too many light skin blacks in their issues. These magazines were the first to show true authentic black beauty. Those with Afros, beads, braids, and full features got show cased the most. B.E.T was another medium that represented the common black American man and woman. You didn't find too many light skin people on B.E.T. Those on B.E.T were either brown, medium brown, dark brown just as the black American population looks. Any light skin person on Black Television or Magazines are in the minority. I know Africans are very black people so people who are brown to us normally look "light" to them. Nonetheless, black journalism whether television or magazine does a great job with showing the common black man and woman.
