Jay-Z American Gangsta

I'm from the 80's,
Home of the heroine,
Error of the hustlers, uh
The world is my custy
New rich porter
The way I flip quarters
Front on all these other rap artists, but me
Momma was a mink wearer, Papa ran numbers
So it's plain to see, where my whole plan come from
American dream, I'm living the life still
The way I shine is like a zillion dollar light bill
Still I'm grinding, army jacket lining
40 below timbs on, getting my M's on
My best friends gone, I seen bad days
Still find songs that I hear him on
Getting my Mary J. Blige Reminisce on
I hear his voice in my mind, like, nigga live on
So I get on that fly **** I been on
Spin on corners in enzo with rims on
But for info, puffin on Endo-Nesia
Give me amnesia
I ease up, that right, I'm high nigga
I want the sky,
The world when I'm done
I'm give it to my sons
Let 'em live it up, split it up, switch it up,
Sixes kit it up, man I did it up, done
The rest of my belongings belong in the hall of fame, a list of hits next to all my names
I came, if the sky should fall
And it all goes tomorrow, and they foreclose on the house and auction off all my cars
Don't cry for me Argentina, I mobbed the beamer
Took trips abroad, got mobbed in Sardina
In Ibiza I had pizza in the club
Ladies know I'm that guy, they wanna piece of my love
Now they wanna ya boy like Mike in his prime
Billie Jean the goddamn boy ain't mine
And the Roc break up, had the people losing hope
Can't lie they had Muhammad Hovi on the ropes
Now I'm back in the go mode, back in the go-go's
Throwing the diamond up, repping the logo
Rose gold rose flow, I'm okay though
What Don't kill me makes stronger than before so
Here we go and I'm not domino
When it all falls down, I'm like Kanye's jaw
I might break but I don't fold, till I hold the sky in my hand
Yeah that's my goal
And then I bid you Freddy Adu
Prodigal Child, y'all not ready for the future
Then I disappear in the Bermuda Triangle
My name will be viewed such
Here's to the man that refused to give up
I want the sky nigga,

You know, I have to give you credit where it is due alT. You do have this polite, diplomatic way of answering a question without letting your fans (the so-called "knowledge scavenger"... [Roll Eyes] ) down too hard. LOL

quote:
So where's the online music service owned and operated
by which hip hop mogul where I can either listen to or
read the lyrics of

EXUMA - Pay me what you owe me
WATTS PROPHETS - Them Niggers ain't playin'; etc
LAST POETS - etc
GIL SCOTT-HERON - etc
NIKKI GIOVANNI - Peace be still; etc
SOUND EXPERIENCE - Give me my Mule
PROPHET MOSE - Would you do it black; etc
GARY BARTZ - Harlem Bush Music album

I was thinking the same thing. Ah yes Watts Prophets, Scott-Heron...damn we have fallen far. [Frown]

*********

Hero, history, purpose, ideology, vision, real men.

Jay-Z "Minority Report"
(feat. Ne-Yo)

[Intro: News Excerpts]
The damage here along the gulf coast is catastrophic.
There's a frantic effort under way tonight to find
survivors. There are an uncounted number of the dead tonight...
People are being forced to live like animals...
We are desperate...
No one says the federal government is doing a good job..
And hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people...
No water, I fought my country for years..
We need help, we really need help..
In Baghdad, they they drop, they air drop water, food to people..why cant they do that to their own people?
The same idiots that can't get water into a major American city in less than three days are trying to
win a war...

[Verse 1 - Jay-Z]
People was poor before the hurricane came
But the down pour poured is like when Mary J. sang
Every day it rains, so every day the pain
But ignored and matured, and the rain was to blame
But life is a chain, cause and effected
Niggas off the chain because they affected
It's a dirty game so whatever is effective
From weed to selling kane, gotta put that in effect
Wouldn't you loot, if you didn't have the loot?
Baby needed food and you stuck on the roof
Helicopter swooped down just to get a scoop
Through his telescopic lens but he didn't scoop you
The next five days, no help ensued
They called you a refugee because you seek refuge
The commander-in-chief just flew by
Did he stop? No, he had a couple seats
Just proved jet blue he's not
Jet flew by the spot
What if he ran out of jet fuel and just dropped
hu,That woulda been something to watch
Helicopters doing fly-bys to take a couple of shots
Couple of portraits then ignored 'em
He'd be just another bush surrounded by a couple orchids
Poor kids just 'cause they were poor kids
Left 'em on they porches same old story in New Orleans
Silly rappers, because we got a couple Porches
MTV stopped by to film our fortresses
We forget the unfortunate
Sure I ponied up a mill, but I didn't give my time
So in reality I didn't give a dime, or a damn
I just put my monies in the hands of the same people that left my people stranded
Nothin' but a bandit
Left them folks abandoned
Damn, that money that we gave was just a band-aid
Can't say we better off than we was before
In synopsis this is my minority report
Can't say we better off than we was before
In synopsis this is my minority report

[Verse 2 - Ne-Yo]
So many times I'm, covering my eyes
Peeking through my fingers
Tryin' to hide my, frustration at the way that we treat
(Seems like we don't even care)
Turn on the TV, seein' the pain
Sayin' such a shame
Then tryin' to go on with my life
Of that, I too, am guilty
(Seems like we don't even care)
So we send a lil' money, tell 'em it's alright
To be able to sleep at night
You will pay that price
While some of these folks' lost their whole life
(Seems like we don't even care)
Now it wasn't on the nightly news no more
Suddenly it didn't matter to you no more
In the end almost nothing changed
What the hell, what was that for?
(Seems like we don't even care)

[Outro: News Excerpts]
...Buses are on the way to take those people from New Orleans to Houston
...They lyin'
...People are dying at the convention center
...Their government has failed them
...George Bush doesn't care about black people

I do agree however that Jay-Z is not revolutionary music (by your defintion - which means literally FIGHTING for what is yours), but it qualifies as rebellious music.

All the lyrics you posted thus far (i.e. Gill Scott) are but rebellious music. You can't have revolution simply by talking about it but talking about it can inspire people to move towards actual revolution.

And I think you posting music of old Jay-Z when he didn't know better (i.e. Big Pimpin') is not fair on the dude. We've all made mistakes. Also, Jay-Z music is entertainment, so for the most part it's not even rebellious music. But it would be wrong to say that the dude's heart is not in the right place.

We're not all perfect but we do the best we can and always try to improve.

Jay-Z - A Billie
quote:

A billie, a billie, a billie, a billionaire
Call me Philli Collins I feel a billion is in the air
I affiliate with Billy Gates
That's my peer
and ?? is my consigliere
When I wear "Billionaire Boys Club" it's more than gear
I don't wear it 'cause Pharrell
I wear it 'cause I'm fo' real
"I see dead people"
I see Benjamins
and a billion other "big head" people
I'ma natural born hustla
Marcy projects mutha fucka
Turned proffesional journalist
reportin' live from the gutter
where girls carry box cutters
brothers shoot-up with undercovers
screamin' "F0ck the World!!"
Why?
Cause' don't no body love us
Sean Carter, Sean Bell
What's the difference? Do tell
50 Shots Or 50 Mill?
Ain't no difference go to hell
So raaahh, lick a shot for Barack Obama
change my Karma or Im'a
buy the whole hood lamas on me
Roc nation army
Million strong and the mantra gon' be :
it is whatever it's gon' be
On three jump in the Humvee
Y'all could call it cold war
I'm declaring I'm free

bumpin' Pac and The Outlawz
I'm flyer that all out doors
I ball out hard
I buy champagne companies
I'm done buyin' out bars...
but I do that
I'm so past G5's and G4's but I flew back
back & forth like Aaliyah - Rest In Piece Tiyah!
Takes a nation of millions to hold us back
but when ya boy reaches a billion it's a wrap
Off of Rap??
Yeah!!
Roc nation, it takes a nation to stop...
I'm signin' off as the hoods Barack...
RRAAAHHH!

Jay-Z - Daddy, Where Have You Been?

quote:

I wanted to walk just like him (remember?)
wanted to talk just like him (word)
often momma said I look too much
and I thought just like him
wanted to drink Miller nips
and smoke Newports just like you
but you left me, now I'm goin to court just like you
I would say "my daddy loves me and he'll never go away"
bullshit, do you even remember December's my birthday?
do you even remember the tender boy
you turned into a cold young man
with one goal and one plan

get mommy out of some jam, she was always in one
always short with the income
always late with the rent
You said that you was comin through
I would stay in the hallway (waitin)
always playin the bench (waitin)
and that day came and went
F0ck You! very much you showed me the worst kind of pain
but I'm stronger now and trust me I will never hurt again
will never ask mommy "why daddy don't love me?
Why is we so poor?, why is life so ugly?
Mommy why is your eyes puffy?"
please don't cry everything'll be alright
I know it's dark now, but we gon' see the light
It's us against the world
we don't need him, right? (right)
mommy drivin 6's now (yeah), I got riches now (yeah)
I bought a nice home for both of my sisters now
we doin real good
we don't miss you now
see how life twists around? (fucka!)

I see nothing revolutionary or inspiring to revolutionaries
in Jay-Z or his lyrics from Big Pimpin all the way to American
Gangsta.

Revolution is what they had in Cuba and the likes of
Gil Scott, the Last Poets, etc., is was and will be
inspiring to revolutionaries -- people who will pick
up a gun to effect real change (and eat rats to survive
if neccessary).

Brother Gil is consistent from his first to his last
with positive messages (not whinings) and actually uses
the word revolution repeatedly album after album. Quite
simply there is no comparison and Jay-Z quite simply is
not about revolution (what? a revolution that would
put his money in danger and eradicate his lifestyle?
Tricks are for kids, revolution is for the mature and
there is no tribute to the Black Panthers (who inspired
revolutionaries the world over) who died for freedom, not
integration. No, the black Americans have not declared
a memorial day for one of the groups that scared the
hell out of the USA government and forced it to open up
the door of MLK less H Rap Brown strike a light and
burn the White House down.

Gil Scott-Heron. Delta Man (where I'm comin' from)

(This is a song about change, you see...
many things about the changing aspects of our lives...
since change is inevitable, we should direct the change
rather than simply continue to go through the change...
...revolution is change.
To the brothers in the Caribbean and Africa,
where I'm Coming from)

Early in the mornin' I heard the call of the crow.
He said "C'mon now Brother. (I want you to fly with me.)
Can't you see, it's time to go?"
I been working on this delta underneath the burnin' sun.
Seem like a Mississippi revolution feel like where I'm coming from.

Brother man run to Nebraska after the Civil War was through.
Worked with his hands, worked on the land alla his life--
nothin' else he know to do.
Rootin'-tootin', wild-west-shootin'-up Brothers!
Though his story don't teach us none.
Seem like a Wild West Revolution oughta be where I'm comin' from.

Brother man raised on welfare (an' live his life)
in the heart of the city.
Among the junkies and the desperate people
he learned about life without pity.
But he's just been thinkin' and waitin' and thinkin' and waitin',
know his chance was bound to come.

The point I'm trying to make movin' from place to place and time to time
(is that) vibrations that bring on new vibrations
is all that's on the People's minds.
(They tell me) Don't be 'fraid of revolution!
It ain't nothin' but change and change is bound to come.
Put a little revolution in your life
and you'll understand where I'm comin' from.

^Truth is I can't return from that. You're right. But I was (deeply) inspired by Jay-Z's music as a teenager. In retrospect, I think what I found in his music is Hope. And the dreams I formed in those years did materialise.

So in many ways he's not different from an Obama.
